Mercury was often known as quick silver. The symbol for the metal was also used to identify the planet Mercury. Due to its to ability to transcend both liquid and solid states, it was thought to be a magic flux that helped dissolve duality and bring such opposites as heaven and hell, life and death, together into a perfectly harmonious whole. Mercury is one of three ingredients said to be necessary for alchemical transformation, the others being, sulphur and salt.
